Members of the Australian Senate, 2008–2011

This is a list of members of the Australian Senate between 1 July 2008 and 30 June 2011. This includes senators elected at the 2004 federal election (whose terms are 2005–2011), and those elected at the 2007 federal election (whose terms are 2008–2014). The Coalition holds 37 seats, Labor 32 seats, Greens five seats, Family First one seat, and one independent, Nick Xenophon.
Assuming party discipline, the Gillard Labor government needed the support of either the Coalition, or of all the other non-Coalition senators to pass legislation.〔(Senate Results: ABC elections )〕 Under Australian Senate rules, tied votes are resolved in the negative.
